Why study with Josh?
Experience: I’ve been
playing and studying drums and percussion for over 15 years, with drum
set and marching snare drum as my forte. Along with teaching, I
continue to play both live shows and studio recording sessions. My
studio sessions have included work on several GCGMA award-winning
albums. Live gigs have included performances with Grammy
nominated artists. Visit the Performances page to find out where you can catch my next live show.
Curriculum: I use a solid and proven curriculum with all my students. Students learn fundamentals such as technique, timing and reading, as well as “real world” essentials such as improvisation and performance. With my experience I can alter the curriculum to meet each students goals and needs, while still providing a solid education.
Multi-instrumentalist: Though I consider drums and percussion my main instruments, I have also studied, played shows, and done recordings on guitar and bass guitar. I can not only give you a “drummer’s perspective”, but can help you understand how your playing effects and relates to the other band members on stage. I can’t tell you how much this other point of view has helped me become a better drummer.
Honesty: a) I am honest with my students about their work and progress. If you don’t practice or need more work in certain areas, I’m quick to tell you. If you’re doing great, I’m quick to tell you that as well. Dishonesty about a student’s progress would only lead to them being a mediocre musician.
b) I am honest about myself and my abilities; I teach only what I know. I would rather refer you to another teacher than to give you a poor quality lesson.
Motivation: I constantly push my students to better themselves. This is done by making music and lessons as fun as possible. Though becoming a great musician requires much work and dedication, I believe you should enjoy the process. Unless you enjoy the journey, why take it?
Facility: My facility is focused on providing the highest quality lessons. This means that your lesson won't be interrupted by someone buying guitar strings, drum sticks, etc, as often happens in music stores and other teaching environments. I believe when you pay for a lesson, you should be given your entire scheduled time free of such distractions, allowing you to have a highly productive learning experience.
